Treasurer’s Bio

Ken & Laurie Hopkins – Treasurer

Ken and I have been serving the Lord as treasurers of Mount Oak Church since 1993. We have two grown sons Peter and Eric.  They are both on their own and we are empty nesters (except for our two dogs). We have been married 30 years and have attended Mount Oak for 27 years.
I was born in Mexico City, Mexico.  I am the middle of 5 children.  I attended the American School from K-8th and then was sent off to boarding school (Marymount High School) which was a girl’s Catholic school in Cuernavaca, Mexico.  I then attended Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.  My majors were Spanish and Child Development with a minor in Religion.
After graduation I moved to the DC area and got a job at the International branch of the National Bank of Washington using my Spanish.  After that I became a picture framer for three years.  I also taught Spanish to pre-school children.  During that time I was very involved as a Young Life leader continuing the leadership role I had started while in Ohio. I lived in DC and attended Fourth Presbyterian Church.  I like dogs, dancing and politics while in all I do seeking the Lord’s will for me and striving to grow in Him.
Next I got a job in the business office at the Psychiatric Institute. (It was at a colleague’s wedding that Ken and I met). Ken was born in Fort Meade, Maryland and attended Andover Jr/Sr High and then the University of Maryland in Accounting and went on to get his CPA. Ken is the oldest of 3 children. He loves history, dancing and hunting. We moved to Bowie when we got married. When our oldest son Peter was born I became a housewife.  I babysat full time at home for about 6 years during which time our son Eric was born. When Eric was 4 I got a job as the Assistant Director of the Tall Oaks Early Learning Center.  I left that job when Mount Oak offered us the job of Treasurer.
